Anthony Perkins’ Curriculum Vitae

At 12 years old, Tony and his friends would scour the San Francisquito Creek running along the Stanford Golf course for stray balls and sell them back to their owners with a glass of lemonade for 25 cents. ‘I always had money in my pocket when I was a kid,’ he says.

Tony Perkins is a Silicon Valley Original Gangster best known as the founder and editor-in-chief of Red Herring magazine. The Herring chronicled the entrepreneurs and investors pioneering the commercialization of the Internet boom in the 1990s and reached a paid subscriber base of over 600,000. The Wall Street Journal described the Red Herring as the “bible of the Internet.”

During his tenure at Red Herring, Tony interviewed most of the entrepreneurial leaders championing the early Internet, including Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Netscape founders Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen, and Yahoo founder Jerry Yang. He also interviewed the most powerful venture capitalists funding the Internet, including Sequoia Capital founder Don Valentine, who seed-funded Apple and Google, and Tom Perkins and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, who seed-funded Genentech, Amazon, and Google. In the heat of the 2000 U.S. Presidental race, Tony spent two hours with future President George W. Bush, who said Tony’s interview was the ‘most insightful and thorough’ conducted during the campaign. Red Herring’s most famous intern was then Stanford University student Peter Theil. Peter went on to found PayPal and Palantir and give Mark Zuckerberg his first seed investment.

The January 1996 cover interview by Tony in Red Herring magazine. Eleven months later — in a stunning move — Apple announced it would purchase Next Software for $400 million and brought Steve Jobs back to the company he cofounded.

During this time, Tony co-authored with his brother Michael, The Internet Bubble: Inside the Overvalued World of High-Tech Stocks” (HarperBusiness, 1999). This internationally best-selling book foretold the dot-com bust.

AlwaysOn — Where the sun is always rising

During the 2000s, Tony was the founder and editor of the global events and blog brand, AlwaysOn. The company produced entrepreneurial summits at Stanford University, NASDAQ’s headquarters in New York City, Hollywood, and the World Economic Forum Davos, Switzerland, where he served as a Media Leader for ten years. AlwaysOn’s focus was to connect entrepreneurs in the media, entertainment, cloud, and Greentech industries with venture investors and major corporate partners. The AlwaysOn annual global Top 250 private companies list was world-renowned for highlighting the top technology companies before they became popularly known.

Out of the the1,483 unique companies that made the AO 250 list from 2003 to 2015, 572 companies were successfully acquired, and 192 companies went public, representing a 52 percent exit rate to date.
YouTube CoFounder Chad Hurley is trying to answer our question on how he expected YouTube to make money at the AlwaysOn Summit at Stanford on July 26, 2006, just seven months after he and John Chen had founded the company. After pondering for a while, Chad eventually said he didn’t know and was quite satisfied with his answer.

While operating AwaysOn, Tony hosted and interviewed Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg (when he was 20 years old), Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Salesforce founder Marc Benioff, Skype founder Nicholas Zennstrom, YouTube founder Chad Hurley, Daniel Ek, founder of Spotify, Twitter and Square founder, Jack Dorsey, Zoom founder, Eric Yuan, and Israeli Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Shimon Perez.

When Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.7 billion after only a little more than a year in business, an event widely perceived as the mark of the top of the Wed 2.0 bubble, which turned out to not be the case.

Cryptonite — Take Back the Power

As founder and editor of Cryptonite, Tony is currently pursuing his life-long dream of connecting entrepreneurs and investors operating in the ‘global Silicon Valley’ onto a trusted social network. Once launched, Cryptonite will be the first blockchain-based, decentralized social network in the world that allows content creators to own and control their content and build new wealth through crypto rewards. Cryptonite is proud to play a role in showcasing what Tony believes will be a booming new generation of decentralized applications and service companies, which will help create a more private and secure world. Tony believes, ‘The best days for the global Silicon Valley are yet to come!’

For this new journey, Tony particularly extends thanks to the blockchain development gurus at Eligma Labs in Slovenia for teaching him about building truly decentralized systems and his life-long friend, Bitcoin multi-billionaire Tim Draper for being Cryptonite’s first investor, and seed-funding other critical new generation companies like Coinbase and Robinhood.

While Tony describes himself first as entrepreneur, he has been a prolific writer, public speaker, and television commentator. In addition to contributing to the brands he created, Tony has also written editorial columns for the Wall Street Journal and Wired, spoken at industry events worldwide, and has been a regular live-on-air commentator for CNN and MSNBC.

Before becoming a media entrepreneur and writer, Tony joined Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) at its inception and cofounded its Technology Group. SVB has since grown into a $200 billion asset bank serving technology entrepreneurs worldwide. He also founded the 10,000 member non-profit Churchill Club, Silicon Valley’s most prominent speaker’s forum that has hosted almost every technology executive of significance, Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, and other major world leaders.
